Allergies

Allergies cause an over-reactivity or hypersensitivity of the immune system to a particular substance, called an allergen. Triggering allergen protein molecules combine with antibodies in the blood, and attach to mast cells. Mast cells then release potent chemicals, such as histamine, that cause local inflammation such as redness, swelling, and itching.
